# Slack

Add GetItDone to Slack and mention @GetItDone to create and update tasks. Install, permissions, AI processing, data and uninstall.

Mention **@GetItDone** in a Slack channel with a plain-language request and it creates, updates or completes tasks in your connected GetItDone workspace, then replies in the thread with what changed. AI can make mistakes, so review the tasks it creates.

## What it does

- **Create, update and complete tasks from a mention.** Invite @GetItDone to a channel and write what you need, for example "@GetItDone add a task to send the invoice to Acme, due Friday" or "@GetItDone mark the onboarding checklist as done".
- **Reads context when you ask it to.** When your request refers to the conversation, for example "this thread", "above" or "earlier", it also reads up to 30 earlier messages from that thread or channel. It can only do that in public channels. A request that does not refer to the conversation does not load any.
- **Shows its progress.** It reacts with 👀 when it starts, then ✅ when it is done or ❌ when it could not finish, and replies in the thread with what changed.
- **App Home.** Open the GetItDone app in Slack and its **Home** tab shows help on how to use it.
- **Daily task reminder (optional).** A once-a-day DM that tells you how many tasks are incomplete and links to your dashboard. Turn on **Slack direct message** under **Notification channels** in your GetItDone profile, under **Notifications**. Mention the bot with just `help` to see the App Home help again.

## Install

Both routes end in the same place. You need a Slack workspace where you are allowed to install apps.

**From GetItDone:**

1. Open **Integrations** in the app.
2. Start the connection from the Slack card.
3. Approve the permissions on Slack's consent screen.

**From the Slack side with Add to Slack:**

1. Open [the install link](https://app.nowgetitdone.com/api/integrations/slack/install) or use the **Add to Slack** button on the [GetItDone Slack page](https://nowgetitdone.com/integrations/slack).
2. Approve the permissions on Slack's consent screen.
3. Sign in to GetItDone, or create an account if you are new, then pick the GetItDone workspace the Slack workspace should connect to.

Finally, invite the bot to each channel you want to use it in, with `/invite @GetItDone`.

The Free plan allows 2 active integrations; Slack counts as one while it is connected. See [Integrations](/docs/integrations).

## Using it

1. In a channel the bot has been invited to, write `@GetItDone` followed by your request.
2. Wait for the ✅ reaction and the thread reply. The reply says what was created or changed.
3. Check the result in GetItDone. If something is wrong, fix it in GetItDone or mention the bot again with a correction.

Examples:

- "@GetItDone create a task: review the Q3 report, due next Wednesday."
- "@GetItDone what is on my plate today?"
- "@GetItDone make tasks from the action items above."
- "@GetItDone push the launch checklist to Friday."

## Permissions

Slack shows these when you install. GetItDone requests the following bot scopes and uses each for one purpose:

| Scope | Why |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `app_mentions:read` | Receive the messages where someone mentions @GetItDone. |
| `channels:history` | Read earlier messages in a public channel or thread when your request refers to them. |
| `chat:write` | Reply in the thread with what changed. |
| `im:write` | Send the optional daily task-reminder DM. |
| `reactions:write` | Add the 👀, ✅ and ❌ reactions to your message. |
| `users:read` | Look up who mentioned the bot. |
| `users:read.email` | Match the Slack user to the GetItDone account with the same email address. |

## AI processing

- Your request text, and any context messages it pulls in, are sent to a third-party large language model through OpenRouter. The model is from the Google Gemini family.
- GetItDone is a multi-tenant service. One Slack workspace connects to exactly one GetItDone workspace.
- The GetItDone app and its database are hosted in Canada (Toronto).
- GetItDone does not use Slack data to train models.

## Your data

- **What is stored.** The Slack workspace id and name, the bot token Slack issues, and the link to your GetItDone workspace. The token is stored so the bot can reply.
- **Message text.** GetItDone does not store Slack message text, except as the tasks you ask it to create. While a request waits to be processed, its text briefly sits in our job queue.
- **Deletion.** The stored Slack token and workspace details are deleted immediately when you disconnect Slack in GetItDone, and as soon as Slack tells us the app was uninstalled or its token revoked. Backups expire on the schedule in our [Privacy Policy](https://nowgetitdone.com/privacy).

## Disconnect or uninstall

Disconnecting asks Slack to revoke the token and deletes it, with the workspace details, from GetItDone immediately. Uninstalling from Slack revokes the token, and we delete it as soon as Slack notifies us:

- **From GetItDone:** open **Integrations** and disconnect Slack.
- **From Slack:** remove the app from your workspace's app management page.

Tasks the bot already created stay in GetItDone; they are ordinary tasks. Delete or archive them there if you no longer want them.

## Troubleshooting

### The bot does not answer

Invite it to the channel first with `/invite @GetItDone`, then mention it again.

### It answers, but ignores what was said earlier in the channel

The bot only reads earlier messages when your request refers to them, for example "this thread" or "above", and only in public channels. In private channels it cannot read the history at all, so put the details in the mention itself.

### "I couldn't find a GetItDone account linked to your Slack email"

GetItDone matches you by email address. The email on your Slack profile must match the email on your GetItDone account. Update either one, then mention the bot again.

### "You've reached your plan's integration limit"

The Free plan allows 2 active integrations. Disconnect one, or upgrade, then connect Slack.
