# Pomodoro timer

Press Start for a 25-minute focus session. When it ends, take a 5-minute break, and after every fourth session a 15-minute one. The timer shows the countdown in the tab title, plays a tone when a phase ends and can show a desktop notification if you allow it. Every length can be changed, there are no ads, and once the page has loaded it keeps working without a network connection.

## Defaults

- Focus: 25 minutes
- Short break: 5 minutes
- Long break: 15 minutes, after every 4 focus sessions

## How to use the Pomodoro Technique

1. **Pick one task.** Decide what this session is for before you start. One task, written down, so you are not choosing while the clock runs.
2. **Focus for 25 minutes.** Press Start and work on that task only. If something else comes up, note it and get back to the task.
3. **Take a 5-minute break.** Stand up, look away from the screen. The timer starts the break for you and plays a tone when it is over.
4. **Take a longer break every fourth session.** After four focus sessions the timer gives you a 15-minute break. Every length can be changed in the settings.

## Questions

### What is the Pomodoro Technique?

A way of working in short, timed sessions with breaks between them, created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and named after his tomato-shaped kitchen timer. The usual rhythm is 25 minutes of focus, a 5-minute break, and a longer break after four sessions.

### Does the timer keep time in a background tab?

Yes. It counts down to a fixed end time instead of counting ticks, so a tab the browser has slowed down still ends on time, and the end tone is scheduled on the audio clock when the phase starts. The tab title shows the time left.

### Can I change the session and break lengths?

Yes. Open Settings to set focus from 1 to 120 minutes, the short and long breaks, and how many sessions come before the long break. The settings are kept in this browser for your next visit.

### Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, yes: the timer, the tone and the notifications all run in the browser and make no network request. Reloading the page needs a connection.

### Why did I not hear the tone?

Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, which pressing Start does. Check that “Play a tone when a phase ends” is ticked in Settings and that the tab is not muted.
